Novartis-EPFL-UNIL meeting

Present your work at the 5th joint Novartis-EPFL-UNIL meeting

The SV postdoc association and the BioScience Network Lausanne together with the Association for Postdoc in Natural Sciences at UNIL are gladly continuing our collaboration with the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research (NIBR) in Basel: the Novartis-EPFL-UNIL (NEU) Meeting. The 5th NEU meeting will take place on the 15th of December 2017 (Friday) in Basel.

The aim of this meeting is to promote interactions among researchers conducting similar types of research in academia and in industry. In addition, this year an HR representative will present information on the ideal profile of a job candidate for Novartis.

PhD students and postdocs will have the opportunity to present their work and learn about research at NIBR. Besides, participants will attend exclusive lab visits at NIBR. Please note that this meeting is not meant to be a job fair.

The tentative layout of the day is as follows:

arrival in Basel at 9 AM (costs of transportation are on the participants)

2 presentations by NIBR scientists

1 presentation by an HR representative

poster presentations by EPFL/UNIL scientists

lunch break

NIBR lab visits

departure to Lausanne around 6 PM

We are looking for PhD students and postdocs from EPFL and UNIL performing research in life science. You will have the opportunity to present a poster and we kindly ask you to submit an abstract (300 words max, no figures) following registration. Please note that you will need your advisors permission to present your work at NIBR.

The registration will start on the 2nd of November and the deadline is on the 9th of November 2017. After registration we will send you a link for abstract submission. Abstracts have to be submitted by latest of 20th of November 2017. Your abstracts will be treated confidential and the organising committee will select participants based on their abstracts. PAST EVENTS

[Figure 1.A.] The Scientific Art Exhibition

Who among us hasn`t posed for a moment to admire the beauty of nature and its visualization in various forms, even though we are meant to see scientific images only as data?

How many emotions arehidden behind every piece of scientific work? Gratitude towards our fellows, suffering for experimentation with mice, endless frustration from unsuccessful experiments, fascination of a new finding, excitement by the reproducibility of an experiment, lack of appreciation, or the fulfilment of working for a good cause?

We invite you to share the beauty you find both in your work and your workplace outside the confines of academia.

The Association for Postdocs in Natural Sciences presents [Figure 1.A.], a photography competition for scientists and staff of the Faculty of Biology and Medicine at UNIL. The best images will be displayed in an exhibition on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th November, 2017 in Galerie La Sonnette in Lausanne.

Submit images in two categories at https://goo.gl/forms/BpKr9jCWC2AVOmkt2.
1. The Object of Science – share the story of your object of science in images. The category is open to submissions of all forms of scientific image generation.
2. The People of Science – people and abstract photography. Take your cameras out and document those turning the wheels of science!
Submission deadline until 15th August!

Alumni Networking event

15th October 2015, 16:30 – 17:30 (EPFL, SV1717) followed by apéro (EPFL, SV Hall)

Sans titre

Taking the next steps in our careers is a daunting prospect. Wouldn’t it be great to get some insight from those who have gone before? What if they could tell us mistakes, tips and tricks, and generally which jobs are out there?

Sans titre1

To get current and former postdocs talking, we launched our first joint alumni event, dedicated to networking between current and former postdocs. Our speakers were all recent postdocs who now work in a variety of sectors, including industry, academia, NGOs, consulting, fund raising and many more.

They shared their insight into starting a career after the postdoc and answered questions from the audience, for example whether additional training during your postdoc is required, whether speaking French, Swiss German or obscure dialects helps, whether they were unemployed after their postdoc and for how long, what kind of internships they were able to do through BNF, what they like about their current job and what it entails on a daily basis, and importantly, how they got to the job they hold now.

Everyone agreed that networking is essential, to get to know about jobs you might not necessarily think of applying for, or not even know they exist. Many had stories about personal contacts lending a helping hand, and all agreed that it pays off to be proactive. So to take a first step, join your LinkedIn groups and get to know who’s out there doing your dream job! And keep your eyes open for the next alumni event, because we will re-run this for sure!
